Best place for tournaments

First of all, this is the 'UK Casino Guide' so I should point out that the Fox is primarily a poker room and not a full casino - unless you count the handful of slots and electronic roulette machines stuffed in the back by the bar.

But for tournament poker, the Fox is top notch. They run up to three tournaments every day, and unlike their biggest london poker rivals, the tournaments consistently get a good turn out - because of this many of the games are guaranteed. And don't worry about turning up late to the game, late registration appears to be permitted until the first break.

The cash game, however, is nowhere near as good as the ones you find at the empire or the vic, but there are normally a few tables running - primarily low stakes NLHE; £1-£1 (10% rake, £7 cap) and £1-£2 (5% rake, £10).

In terms of loyalty, they run a monthly tournament leaderboard and a rake race.

You should also be aware that the fox is a members only club, and for some reason they feel the need to charge £10 for membership - something that no other london poker venue seems to do. Which is a mild irritation.

My other criticism is that a large portion of the players are regulars who feel like the own the place - expect some backchat if you call someones flopped set with a gutshot straight draw. Although this does offer the opportunity to play like an idiot for a while in an attempt to upset the table equilibrium.

I've never eaten here (or really seen many people eat) so I have no idea what the food is like. Beer is four pounds and change for a bottle (Peroni).

Good for regulars, not ideal for tourists.

The fox is a pretty decent poker venue located on shaftsbury avenue, close-ish to china town (nearest tube stations are leicester square and picadilly).

It's open 24 hours a day for cash games, and they run a multiple tournaments every day. The crowd here is much more poker-orientated rather than tourists who have stumbled in after a session at the roulette wheel so you'll start to recognise regulars.

There's waitress service at the tables, but the beer selection is a bit lacking, as well as people wandering round giving massages for £1 a minute.

You need to pay for membership (around £10) which comes with a free beer and a spin on the electronic roulette wheel - so it's probably not the best choice if you're only in town for a day.
